Passing the Torch and Igniting 100 Ways to Serve

6:22 AM  |  Sunrise Ceremony  (Deltas Only | Cost: Free)

Milliken State Park . 1900 Atwater . Detroit

A moving and fitting tribute to our Founders, this sunrise ceremony on the beautiful Detroit riverfront will mark the official lighting of the Delta torch on the 12th stop of the national Delta Torch Tour. From the moment you exit your car, you will feel how special this historic moment will be. Members should dress warmly as it is an outdoor event.  


9:00-11:00 AM  |  Service Activity  (Public Event | Cost: Free)

Support efforts to promote literacy and serve our veterans

Join Deltas and other volunteers as we come together to serve our community in honor of our founding principles. Donate books to promote literacy and/or canned goods that will be provided to Piquette Square, an apartment complex that houses 150 veterans. Donations can be dropped off during your visit to Delta Manor between 9:00-11:00 a.m. or to DSTDFI Headquarters (Deltas only) between 10:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Visit Delta Manor, a 20-year old, 100-unit senior citizen apartment complex built and operated by the Detroit Deltas.  


10:22 AM  |  Museum Exhibition Ribbon Cutting  (Public Event | Cost: Free*)

Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History . 315 E. Warren . Detroit

Browse a historic collection of articles, photos, memorabilia, and other items highlighting the rich history of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Light refreshments will be served.

*This event is free to museum members and the first 100 nonmembers. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children and seniors.   


10:00 AM-2:30 PM  |  Open House (Deltas Only | Cost: Free)

DSTDFI Headquarters . 24760 W. 7 Mile Road . Detroit

Come fellowship with members of DAC and other chapters throughout the Midwest. Kick off your shoes, have a bite to eat, tour our wonderful facility, or even find a quiet place to take a snooze. A light lunch will be served.


10:00 AM-2:30 PM  |  Photos with the Torch (Deltas Only | Cost: $22 and $100)

DSTDFI Headquarters . 24760 W. 7 Mile Road . Detroit

Members are invited to document this historic event with a commemorative photo with the torch while its flame burns in Detroit during our centennial year. Become a torch bearer as you take a historic picture with the torch. Choose one of several popular landmark sites as your background. Take a picture alone, then take one with your family members, line sisters, co-workers, or chapter members to forever remember and document this historic ocassion. After you register, someone will contact you to schedule your photo slot time.

Individual photos are $22. Group photos are $100 and include up to five instant copies; additional photos are $10 each. Make checks payable to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and mail them to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Detroit Alumnae Chapter, Attn: Torch Photo, c/o DSTDFI Headquarters, 24760 West 7 Mile Road, Detroit, MI 48219. 


3:00 PM  |  Torch March (Deltas Only | Cost: Free)

Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School . 3200 E. Lafayette . Detroit

Join us at the school for a rousing march, followed by our national, regional, state, and local sorors and our teen groups, who will bring in the torch during our public presentation before family, friends, and the community. Be one of the hundreds of Deltas we are expecting to participate in a ceremonial lap with the torch. SORORS MUST BE ON THE TRACK AT 3:00 PM TO PARTICIPATE.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School . 3200 E. Lafayette . Detroit

Invite everyone you know to come celebrate Delta's 100th birthday with you at this public presentation of the torch. Representatives from dozens of nonprofit organizations and committed metro Detroiters will join Deltas on a symbolic march and passing of the torch, during which we will pay tribute to our past National Presidents Lillian Pierce Benbow and Hortense Golden Canady. This tour presentation is the official kick-off of 100 Ways to Serve, a year-long, city-wide campaign designed to inspire and promote volunteerism. The campaign encourages metro Detroiters to take a "Pledge to Serve" and provides those who do so with more than 100 selected hands-on service activities with nonprofit organizations. It also commences the beginning of the Detroit Deltas Torch STEM Project involving more than 500 girls at the Detroit International Academy.

Elmwood Cemetery . 1200 Elmwood Street . Detroit  

This is the final event of the Detroit Torch Tour. We will extinguish the flame as members gather at the historic Elmwood Cemetery, the final resting place of our 15th National President Lillian Pierce Benbow. We will pay tribute to her and past National President Hortense Golden Canady in a special way.
