The Detroit Alumnae Chapter Delta Torch Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Project

The Detroit Alumnae Chapter STEM project is scheduled to begin the week of April 8, 2013, at the Detroit International Academy (DIA). It will provide 525 students with an opportunity to examine the history of the Olympics and the Olympic torch. Students will study not only the scientific aspects of the torch, including its dimensions, the chemistry of the fuel composition and combustion, and environmental impact considerations, but also the origins of the torch in Greek history and its significance in the Olympic Games and ceremonies. Throughout the STEM program, there will be planned connecting and inspirational interactions between the girls and the women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

STEM Learning Outcomes

By April 8, 2013, 525 students from the Detroit International Academy and the Delta GEMS and EMBODI programs will be engaged in learning by utilizing the 7 E Learning Cycle—Elicit, Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate and Extend—which requires demonstrating through example and exploring through  interaction.

From April 9-12, 2013, 525 students will participate in chemistry lab experiences involving fuel composition, combustion and environmental impact lessons.

By April 15, 2013, 525 students will begin to employ various technologies to explore and discuss the history of the Olympic games and the purpose of the Olympic torch in those games.

By April 26, 2013, art projects, other visuals, and team PowerPoint or Prezzi presentations will be developed and placed on display at the school.

By April 30, 2013, students' interest in STEM careers will be piqued following planned connections with caring adults employed in STEM professions.

Grade Level and Number of Students

Lessons will be delivered to a total of 525 students: 223 in grades 7-9 and 302 in grades 10–12, in lecture format, through art projects, and by using other visuals such as Prezzi presentations that are interactive and engaging. Pre- and post tests will be delivered to assess learning outcomes.  An additional key element of this partnership is the great expectation that the school’s counselors will inform and encourage all grade level eligible students to apply for annually awarded Detroit Alumnae Chapter Scholarships available in 2013.
